Polystyrene PS visual display specialists, Styrotech Ltd, based in the West Midlands, Polystyrene PS, had to apply their skills and resourcefulness when helping Pickering Hutchins stand out from the crowd on one of their stands, at the recent 2008 UK Cereals Show in Leadenham, Lincolnshire. The Agricultural two day event, held on 64ha of Andrew Ward’s 650ha farm, was transformed into Europe’s biggest arable technical field event. With more than 380 exhibitors ready to display their wares, 23,900 people flooded through the entrance gates on 11th and 12th June 2008. The project started when Director, Dean Hutchins, of the Advertising and Marketing Agency PickeringHutchins, asked Styrotech to create four large 3D visual displays for their client’s ‘Roundup’ brand identity, which would be featured on their exhibition stand at the event. Roundup is a renowned agricultural chemical which is used extensively by the UK farming community.   The brief was to recreate ‘Roundup’ in 3 metre wide by 1.5 metre high letters with a large rainbow type shape above the lettering. Styrotech MD Brent Holton said: “The interesting characteristics of this challenge was to fully understand, right from early discussions, how we were going to retain the brand’s integrity, which was of paramount importance to the client. Working with large scale lettering, from both a manufacturing and on-site installation aspect, coupled with it being in the middle of a farmer’s field, meant we had to be very mindful of the way we tackled these particular exhibition visuals.” Styrotech Project Manager Mike said: “We decided the construction would be based on using lightweight polystyrene, which, through our dedicated design software, was cut and shaped using our 3D triple axis hot wire machine. We then faced the front surface with Foamex to ensure a corporate colours pantone match, and finally fixed it together with special clear Perspex rods, and spaced it exactly according to the original brand identity.” Dean Hutchins said: “As the brand guardian, our greatest concern was maintaining the true integrity of Roundup. Ironically, recreating the correct spaces between the letters was just as important as the letters themselves. Our ‘Roundup’ signs proved to be a talking point at the exhibition and certainly helped attract more visitors to our stand.” Dean added: “Styrotech’s 3D representation was so accurate that the end result was really impressive, all thanks to the incredible attention to detail given by Martin, Mike, Stuart and the whole of the Styrotech team. They were meticulously professional, very conscientious, and extremely attentive to the project requirements, offering us an unrivalled dedicated and personal service.” The 2009 Cereals Event in the UK will be held on the 10th and 11th June 2009 at Vine Farm, Wendy, Nr Royston, Cambridgeshire. Event organiser Haymarket will also be launching a sister event in Poland which will be on the 4th and 5th of June 2009 near Poznan in western Poland.
