Some who do not have a motor vehicle long for the freedom and convenience that owning one would bring.  Most people who own a car are only too aware of the cost of general maintenance, repairs, gas and insurance.  For many, the benefits of owning a car certainly outweigh the drawbacks, as the number of vehicles on our roads demonstrates!  No matter what the make, model or age of your vehicle, driving carefully and taking good care of your vehicle can save a great deal of money and heartache. Driving is one of those skills that everyone wants to be good at.  It seems that accepting criticism of driving is very difficult, this is probably due to the fact that it is so important to drive safely.  No one wants to be accused of putting lives at risk.  If you feel that your driving needs improving, or that you could do with checking over any driving information such as signs and highway rules, seek advice.  Another way in which you can be as safe as possible on the roads is to keep your vehicle properly maintained.  Do not overlook the fact that keeping parts such as tires and brakes in the best condition possible can make the difference between an accident and a near miss. When sitting in a car, especially newer models with all their added comfort and safety features, many people are lulled into a false sense of security.  Having said this, it is certainly advisable not to be panicked on the roads or anxious to the point where it negatively impacts on your ability to perform or concentrate, but always be aware that driving requires your full attention.  Many forget that overall stopping distances are just a governed by your reaction and thinking times as by how efficient your brakes are.  Even the best brakes available on the market cannot prevent accidents if you have not noticed or responded to hazards quickly enough.  Wet or icy weather need to be taken into account, even if you are in a hurry, you will need to drive at a speed suitable for the conditions. A car’s brakes should be checked regularly to ensure they are in good working order, if they begin to squeal or shudder, or behave in other unexpected ways, you should get them looked at by a trained mechanic.  The tread depths on tires should also be monitored, and you should keep an eye out for any cuts or bulges, and the general condition of the rubber.  Check tire pressures frequently and inflate more if necessary. Whether your vehicle is a brand new sports car, kitted out with the best tires and performance brakes, or an old jalopy, make sure you are looking after it properly.  Do everything you can to be the most responsible driver you can be.  Accidents can often be prevented if we give our full attention to the road and other road users, and if we keep our cars in proper working order.
