Hard as it is to admit to ourselves, one major obstacle in us achieving our ideal weight and keeping a healthy lifestyle is none other than…ourselves! It’s either we’re too busy with work and chores that we just don’t have time to hit the gym or cook a healthy meal, or we’re too lazy and tired most of the time to exercise. No matter the reason, we cannot discount the fact that exercising is an important factor in keeping a healthy body and staying away from diseases as much as we can. How many people do we know who have suffered from sudden heart attacks or other life-threatening diseases because of negligence? We work our bodies to more than their maximum capabilities, and yet we fail to consider the effects it will have on us in the long run. We do not need a drastic lifestyle change or a major revamp in our hectic schedules to be able to give our bodies their much-needed exercise. We only need to be a little imaginative and creative to come up with exercise alternatives. Exercising at Home but Not Really Doing household chores is good exercise. Mopping, vacuuming and sweeping the floor can be good for your upper arms, your thighs and legs, and even your posture. You can switch from the right arm to the left as you go around cleaning your floor, and don’t forget to maintain your posture so the activity can likewise help keep your back strong. Reaching up the cupboard to get something instead of getting your step ladder every time is also good. It flexes your muscles, and if you suck in your abs while reaching up, you are helping tone your stomach muscles as well. As in a regular exercise regimen, pacing your breathing can help you not to feel immediately tired and strained from the activity. Other household chores can exercise your body without meaning to such as mowing the lawn, raking the leaves and washing your car. You can also put in your favorite dance tunes once in awhile and just dance away in the bedroom or living room! Regular Activities as Your Alternative Exercise If you are a busy career person and you have no time to hit the gym, there’s no reason why you can’t get the kind of exercise you need. For starters, you can skip driving every other day and take the bus instead. The walk from home to the bus depot and your drop-off to your workplace is a good form of exercise. On days that you do bring the car, try to park as far away as you can and walk to your building. If you’re in front of the computer all day, flex your feet and abs once in awhile to exercise them. Do this for at least eight reps at a time. You can also flex your neck muscles to loosen them up from holding the same position for a long time. If you have children, play sports with them on weekends. You do not only give them quality time with you but you also keep your body fit and healthy. In fact, just horsing around with your toddlers and big kids is exercise enough. You can even make it your regular family bonding time to assign each member of the family to plan activities for the weekend. You can put rules so your games will involve physical activities. Ride your bike around the block a couple of times per week especially when going to a neighbor’s a few blocks from your house or going to the grocer’s. You don’t have to get stuck with an exercise regimen to have a healthy and fit body, just use your imagination.
